Writing Goals for December and Beyond!
Writing down goals is helpful, right? OK. By the first day of 2007, I'll have completed the novella (erotic urban fantasy w/romance elements under my pen name) I've been working on since May. No more distractions. Then, starting January 1, 2007, I'll re-read book #1 in my proposed series (the one about the Denver psychologist who gets pulled into the vamp underground), read the completed chapters of book #2, then get back to work on it. My goal will be to finish book #2 by the end of 2007. Unless, of course, some kind of MOTIVATION -- say, in the form of selling book #1 with interest in book #2 -- happens. That tends to kick-start my energy. At this point it is my intention to NOT get distracted by writing any more short stories, but Zara has been whispering in my ear again, so if I make good progress on series book #2, maybe I can spend a little more time in Zara's world in 2007. Maybe.
I've been fascinated by various higher consciousness philosophies for years and have based all my therapeutic and intuitive work on those foundations. As a writer/author, I always include aspects of expanded awareness into all my stories/books and I'm very involved in offering groups, classes, etc. I've noticed over the last couple of years (and especially the last few months) that interest in these topics is growing. Thanks to the success of movies like "What the Bleep," "The Peaceful Warrior, ""Conversations with God," and "The Secret," subjects like the Law of Attraction are entering the mainstream. I've often mentioned Esther Hicks, a motivational speaker who has brought more clarity to the topic of deliberate creation/manifestation through the Law of Attraction than anyone before her. Jane Roberts did a wonderful job years ago with her "Seth" material, and many other people have put (and are continuing to put) their own spin on the notions. But Esther's approach is simple, clear, humorous and doesn't add on a lot of unnecessary New Age, psychological or religious baggage. She's a marvelous quantum teacher. Anyway, check out their new book, "The Law of Attraction" (by Esther and Jerry Hicks), which is now available on Amazon. I feel like I've been standing on a high cliff for years and years, waiting for this particular ship to finally come in, and I can see the sails shining in the sun! So many great paranormal books, so little time . . .
Boulder's library used to have this "hold" policy where everything was sent via mail, for a $1 mailing fee. I tend to scour the catalog weekly and put as many things on hold as I can. Waiting for them to arrive by mail was really a pain in the butt. Thankfully, they've recently given us book fiends the option of picking up the little treasures in person at the main library. So, I've been devouring even more books than usual. I wouldn't have discovered even half the cool vampire books I've found if the library didn't buy a lot of them. There must be a vampire fan in the library's book-ordering department. Anyway, I've been in undead heaven.
I found a whole series I'd never heard of: the Dracula books by Fred Saberhagen. Never heard of him, either. I read his reprint of "An old friend of the family" in one day. Nice vampire mythology. Vlad Tepes is the main character. Not the monster version. The European gentleman version. Can't wait to read the other books in the series. I also read (in 1.5 days) the first book in a Texas Vampires trilogy by Diane Whiteside. Very nice. Silkily erotic, with lots of additional metaphysics and ancient history woven in. Very beta-ish alpha hero. Yum.
I've also noticed that a lot of the popular ("light") vampire books (the ones with long waiting lists previously) at the library are suddenly on the shelves. No more waiting list. Lots of copies to take out. I actually think that's a good thing. Maybe we're all getting tired of the silly stuff (not to be confused with the FUNNY or CLEVER or WITTY stuff, please). And, maybe as the fad calms, there will be a market for my novel. Wish me luck!
